Native C-reactive protein increases whereas modified C-reactive protein reduces atherosclerosis in apolipoprotein E-knockout mice.
BACKGROUND C-reactive protein (CRP) may have proatherogenic but also vasoprotective properties. We tested the hypothesis that the configuration of CRP (pentameric, or native [nCRP], versus monomeric, or modified [mCRP]) determines these different characteristics in an in vivo model. METHODS AND RESULTS We investigated the effects of human nCRP and mCRP on the development of atherosclerosis in...
متن کاملC-REACTIVE PROTEIN RESPONSE IN ANGINA PECTORIS
C-reactive protein (CRP) response was studied in 44 patients with acute angina pectoris admitted to the coronary care unit. 71 % of patients with acute myocardial infarction (MI)had positive CRP test while 73% of patients presumed to have unstable angina pectoris had negative CRP test. This test can be helpful in differentiating between acute MI and unstable angina pectoris.
متن کاملRelationship between High-Density Lipoprotein and C-reactive Protein in Patients with Atherosclerosis
Abstract Background and Objective: Atherosclerosis is an inflammatory disease mostly caused by oxidation of low density lipoproteins (LDLs) while High-density lipoproteins (HDLs) oppose atherosclerosis by inhibiting the oxidation of LDLs. Serum concentration of C- reactive protein (CRP) also increases as an acute phase protein in inflammatory conditions like atherosclerosis. We aimed to evalu...
متن کاملMaternal Serum C- Reactive Protein Concentration in Gestational Diabetes
OBJECTIVE: Low-grade systemic inflammation is associated with an increased risk of type 2 diabetes. C-Reactive Protein (CRP), an acute phase protein produced by hepatocytes, may be associated with diabetes. This study aimed to compare serum levels of CRP in women with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), impaired glucose tolerance test and control subjects. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this ca...
متن کاملC-reactive protein accelerates the progression of atherosclerosis in apolipoprotein E-deficient mice.
BACKGROUND Plasma C-reactive protein (CRP) concentration is a strong predictor of atherosclerosis. However, to date, there is no in vivo evidence that CRP is proatherogenic. METHODS AND RESULTS We studied the effect of human CRP transgene (tg) expression, under basal and turpentine-stimulated conditions, on atherosclerosis in apolipoprotein (apo) E-/- mice. Aortic atherosclerotic lesions in 2...
